Introduction to Stata
Winter term 2016/17
OrganisationThere is a weekly lecture. In order to practice a lot, the lectures will, soon after a starting lecture part, take place in a PC room with tutorial exercises and problem sets. Therefore, it is not a theoretical but a practical lecture where all commands and techniques are implemented in STATA by the student. Course RequirementsThe course is purely voluntary. There is no compulsory exam. Knowledge in econometrics and statistics is an advantage. Students can receive a certificate of participation if desired, which requires a complete attendance, however. ContentThe lecture offers an introduction to one of the most widely used statistics and econometrics software for empirical economic research – Stata. The lecture will have two parts. We start with a propaedeutic in the lecture room. Afterward we will change to the computer room and practice everything discussed, so that you get experienced with the software. Knowledge of basic statistics and econometrics is useful, but the course is generally open to everyone interested. Depending on the pre-knowledge and interests of the participants the course content is flexible. For MEPS students it is a nice opportunity to apply the knowledge learned during the Econometrics lecture in Matlab to the Stata software, which is much more adequate for econometric research than Matlab. The course will be taught in English unless all participants prefer German. ReadingA very good introduction to Stata is the text book of Christoph Baum, which is available in the library of the university. You find additional references on the list below.

Time and place | Lecture (LSF) Tuesday The number of participants is restricted by the number of working computers in the PC room, which ought not to represent a binding constraint. | |
